Kimbo loses, life goes on for EliteXC and MMA
YouTube sensation turned MMA fighter Kimbo Slice was destroyed in 14 seconds on CBS Saturday in their EliteXC show. Kimbo was originally slated to fight WWE wrestler and popular tomato can Ken Shamrock, but ended up facing Seth Petruzelli after Ken suffered an injury while warming up for the fight. My take
1. It was stupid to have him fight Seth Petruzelli. Seth isn't a great fighter, but he's a lot better than Kimbo, who is absolutely terrible. It was a lose/lose situation for both Kimbo and EXC: If Kimbo wins, he gains little because he beat a nobody. If he loses, well, he lost to a nobody.
2. While I'm sure this seems like the end of the world for EXC and Kimbo, it isn't a big deal at all. With casual MMA fans, whether a fighter wins or loses isn't a substantial factor in their popularity. We've seen Tito, Chuck, and Randy lose in the UFC with little to no effect on the way fans feel about them. EliteXC should just move along as though nothing happened, and if possible get Ken Shamrock as Kimbo's next opponent.

Since EliteXC is going after the mainstream audience, do you think the Kimbo loss effects them differently?
I agree that hardcore MMA fans aren't worried about Kimbo, but will the mainstream audience that EliteXC is going after react differently?
That's just it: the hardcore fans care when people lose, but mainstream fans couldn't care less. So I'm sure the EXC crew if freaking out, but they shouldn't worry so much. Kimbo will continue to draw- look at Ken Shamrock. He hasn't won a fight since 2004, but can still headline a show.
